Bollywood sensation Shah Rukh Khan, 46, was stopped on his arrival to New York by immigrations officials after getting off a jet from India. Khan was detained for over an hour, subject to intensive questioning, despite being invited to lecture at Yale University. He was hours late for the event and the episode has prompted a formal apology from U.S. officials.
'We apologize for any inconvenience that Mr Shah Rukh Khan may have experienced,' a statement from U.S. Embassy spokesman Peter Vrooman read. Khan's plane landed at a White Plains airport on Thursday with Nita Ambani, the wife of India's richest industrialist, Mukesh Ambani. The plane was a private jet belonging to the Ambanis, who's daughter attends Yale University and sits as the university's South Asian Society chair.
The questioning caused Khan to be almost three hours late to his lecture, where he was being honored as a Chubb Fellow.
The Chubb Fellowship is meant to allow Yale students intimate access to discuss international issues and 'the challenges and pleasures of public life' with it's winner. Khan drew on his experience with immigration to begin his speech.
'It's nice to be here...finally,' Khan said to the cheering crowd of students. 'We were detained at the airport, as always, for an hour and a half.' Khan was detained for two hours at Newark Airport in 2009 during a similar incident. 'Whenever I start feeling too arrogant about myself, I always make a trip to America,' Khan said. 'The immigration guys kick the star out of stardom.' 'It always happens,' Khan continued. 'They always ask me how tall I am and I always lie and say five-feet 10 inches. Next time I am going to get more adventurous. If they ask me, 'What color are you?' I am going to say 'white.''
News of the 'King of Bollywood's' detention has caused an uproar across oceans, including in India, where the actor's name is a top trend on Twitter. Indian officials were reportedly fuming over the incident and the U.S. embassy issued a formal apology. 'Please allow me on behalf of our diplomatic mission in India to apologize if Mr Shah Rukh Khan experienced an inconvenience or delay yesterday in White Plains, New York, on his way to Yale University,' Vrooman said. Vrooman added that his own daughter is an avid fan of Khan's. 'Many Americans are great fans of Indian movies, and respect the work of the great actor, Shah Rukh Khan.'

If SRK or any celebrity have any problem with USA why do they rush USA ofen. For affluent citizens of our country USA is second (even first) home. They send their children for education in USA, do shopping their, spend holidays their (and thus waste our valuable currency their). Ask any celebrity their favourite holiday destination, they will name any place abroad. Imagine how much currrency our producer / director spend on shooting abroad, cant they spend this money in their own money and generate employment here. India has everything i.e mountains, deserts, beautiful beaches, rivers , valleys etc.. USA or any country has every right for the safeguard of their citizen and if someone think that USA must bend rule for the convenient of someone they must not visit their
ReplyDeleteWell said Rajkumar. India has beautiful holiday destinations Goa being one of them. Celebrities should make sure to advertise their countries more whether they are abroad or inside their own countries.
